congo disease deaths” An mysterious ailment originally detected in three youngsters who ate a bat has swiftly killed more than 50 people in northeastern Congo over the past five weeks, health specialists warn.

The majority of the time, 48 hours, has passed between the onset of symptoms, which include fever, vomiting, and internal bleeding, and death, and “that’s what’s really worrying,” according to Serge Ngalebato, medical director of Bikoro Hospital, a regional monitoring center.

Based on tests of more than a dozen samples gathered thus far, researchers have ruled out the known deadly viruses that are frequently associated with these “hemorrhagic fever” symptoms, including dengue, Marburg, yellow fever, and Ebola.

The newest illness epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo began on Jan. 21, with 419 cases documented and 53 fatalities.

The outbreak began in the town of Boloko after three youngsters ate a bat and died within 48 hours, the Africa branch of the World Health Organization said Monday.

There have long been concerns about diseases jumping from animals to humans in places where wild animals are popularly eaten. In 2022, the WHO reported that the number of such outbreaks in Africa had increased by over 60% over the previous ten years.

After the second epidemic of the mysterious sickness began in the town of Bomate on Feb. 9, samples from 13 patients were submitted to the National Institute for Biomedical Research in Congo’s capital, Kinshasa, for testing, the WHO said. All samples were negative for typical hemorrhagic fever illnesses, however some tested positive for malaria.

Last year, another mystery flu-like illness that killed dozens of people in another part of Congo was determined likely to be malaria.
